Googoosh (stage name of Faegheh Atashin) is an icon and standard-bearer of secular and open-minded Iranians throughout the world who consider her “Iran's Daughter” (the title of a 2000 bio-pic). After the 1979 Iranian revolution, the clerics who seized power declared that women’s voices corrupted men & banned her music. Many of her 33 & 45 vinyl recordings were hidden away or destroyed. Some were transferred to cassette tapes in the 1980s. Her passport was seized & Googoosh could not leave Iran until 2000, under the relatively liberal Khatami presidency. She now resides in Los Angeles, where she has many fans among the 750,000 Iranians there. This CD offers her most popular recordings of the early 1970s. Strong rhythm sections & elaborately orchestrated strings back up her luscious voice singing mid-tempo torch songs. Googoosh combines the long tradition of classical Persian love poetry & Middle Eastern musical techniques with jazz, bossa nova, & early disco influences.
