“A Bulgarian singing waiter, a doctor, a bass from the Comic Opera, a musical prodigy, a whorehouse pianist . . . and a Polish Rabbi walk into a bar,” Josef Roman “Rabbi” Cykowski (Chip Zien) says near the beginning of Harmony, the biographical musical that opened tonight at the Museum of Jewish Heritage — A Living Memorial to the Holocaust, presented by the National Yiddish Theatre Folksbiene.
Throughout his nearly sixty-year career, Brooklyn-born songster Barry Manilow has won a Tony, two Emmys, a Grammy, and an honorary Clio for his classic jingles and has released more than three dozen albums (including eight gold and eight platinum records) that have sold more than eighty-five million copies. You might know him as the casual-cool Apple fan in the “Get a Mac” ads. You might know him for his roles in more than 50 movies and TV shows, starting with his turn as a young sci-fi geek turned hero in 1999’s “Galaxy Quest.”
You might not know Justin Long as perhaps the entertainment industry’s most dedicated Charles Darwin fanboy. But the father of evolutionary theory happens to have been an early hero of the actor, who’s now appearing as another pretty big thinker — Albert Einstein — in the Old Globe production of Steve Martin’s “Picasso at the Lapin Agile.”
While Long’s Hollywood exploits have been a bit more high-profile than his theater work, he has done several plays on the East Coast over the years (including a 2012 stint in “Seminar” on Broadway).
(That stage history prompted Globe co-star Philippe Bowgen, who plays Picasso, to tell Long when they crossed paths during recent interviews in Balboa Park: “I associate you with New York.” Long’s snappy reply: “Hot dogs, the Yankees, George Gershwin and me. Is that what you mean?”)
